Remember When…? Retro Junk

sprinkle_spangles.jpgFound a simply AMAZING website today called Retro Junk. Basically, this site showcases the movie trailers, commercials, and other bits of nostalgia that my generation (including the 70s, 80s, and 90s) all knew as kids.

A few of my favorites are the (now politically incorrect) cereal commercials, and my favorite cartoons from the 90s.

Here are Sprinkle Spangles… an extreme example of how the obesity epidemic has taken over the lives of so many children. Small bowl? No problem for the Sprinkle Genie!

Haha, another hilarious set of picks are the Pizza Hut: Pizza Head commercials from the 90s. There’s a great “Star Wars” version right here.

And you just can’t forget the awesome TV cartoons of the 90s: Duck Tales anyone?

Stop on by Retro Junk and see what you can dig up from your childhood!

Free DVDs

freedvd.jpgLooking for some fantastic freebies like the rest of us?

Have no fear, no “fill out thirty-thousand sponsors to win this mac book pro” gimicks here. My good friends at College Humor have a slightly different idea in mind: Leg-Guitar Thrash-Off.

The first 20 contestants to send a picture of themselves thrashing on their leg like a double-necked Gibson to OhManOfCourse IWantAFreeDVD@Gmail.com will win a copy of Reno 911!: Miami on DVD. If you like the show, you’ll love the movie. And if you love the movie, you’ll really love the DVD. So lift those thighs and start strumming.

Enjoy!

Love for Essential Keystrokes!

essentialkeystrokes.pngThe lovely Char at Essential Keystrokes put up a post today that sent the hugest smile to my face :D

She’s taken part in the tradition of “Blogtipping” begun by Easton at Business Blogwire as a way to share new blogs with readers and give “kudos” to others. It takes place on the first of the month and includes any three blogs.

Char was so kind as to choose three of my blogs as her picks!

This month I have been introduced to an extremely talented blogger/designer named Lara. She has (at least) three blogs so I am going to tip each one of them – they definitely deserve the attention. And did I mention that Lara is just finishing up her senior year of high school? This girl has got a very bright future.

She did a run down of Blog What? Design, Crunchy Mustard, and this blog, The Desired.

So, head on over to Essential Keystrokes. Char’s blog is great. She offers tons of tips and perspectives on blogging, and other internet goodies.

Complete Online Backup System

I found this nifty system today online – “Carbonite Online Backup.” It attracted my attention because it offers a complete online backup system that runs automatically.

I figure, since I’ll be toting my laptop away to college next year with some extremely important files on it, it will definitely be a good idea to back things up often. Right now, I’m using the 15 day trial and we’ll see how things work from there.

Search K-Fed Style

k-fedgooglesmall.JPGYour favorite trash celebrity, Kevin Federline has done it all. From text-messaging plans, to tacos… he’s got your gimmicky marketing covered. Who would have thought that this wash up would make it? In fact… he’s looking to be the better parent after Britney’s no-panties tour ending at Promises.

The wit-filled celebrity gossips at Best Week Ever said:

Search With Kevin Marketing Campaign allowing you to search for things on the Internet as you would using Google, but with K-Fed’s stupid face staring at you while doing so. Pretty awesome, right. We still think Gizoogle is a much better “white people who talk black” searching solution, but we’ll admit that it’s pretty funny when you do a “Kevin Federline, Douchebag” search (sadly, BWE.tv doesn’t show up on the first page of results).

Read a great book lately?

bookcrossing2.pngI stumbled upon this awesome online project today called “BookCrossing.” The site is home to a large community project which organizes a sort of an extremely public library service. The site has more than three million books registered with a very strong and active community behind it.

The entire process runs like this:

The “3 Rs” of BookCrossing…

  1. Read a good book (you already know how to do that)
  2. Register it here (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book
  3. Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, donate it to charity, “forget” it in a coffee shop, etc.), and get notified by email each time someone comes here and records a journal entry for that book. And if you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!

The FAQ states that the idea for BookCrossing came from those funny online dollar bill tracking websites that you see on your money but never use. (However there are some awesome tracking sites out there like PhotoTag who releases disposable cameras and then instructs photographers to upload the photos online.) This seems like a great project for a free day (wish I had more of those!) so I’ll definitely check it out.

Who thinks these things up?

advertisement.gifI saw this advertisement on a news site today while I was reading an article. Who thinks these kinds of ads up? And secondly – who would click on something like this? It’s a little strange, don’t you think?

As you may have noticed – I switched back the theme to my old “Save a yellow rose” theme. I wanted to help bring in the Spring season, but I’m just swamped at work and couldn’t get a new design done for myself. However, have no fear! I will hopefully be revising an old idea I had and launching that soon.

Create Your Own Stamps

catstamp.pngFlickr is hands down, the best photo sharing community and service on the internet. Not only do they have a excellent tools for quick uploading and fast organization, they offer access to an amazing tool too! YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN STAMPS.

Choose any photo, and the screen brings you to the awesome tool offered by Zazzle. Rotate and edit the photo any way you’d like, and BAM… you’ve got your cat on a stamp. Now those stamp collectors can start collecting stamps of you. Pretty cool eh?

Flickr accounts are super easy to set up, and if you run a WordPress blog there are tons of plugins out there for you too. Run over to BWD and we’d be happy to install one for you.

Anyways, that’s my novel news piece for the day. In other news:

  • Britney Spears left rehab for rehab.
  • Paris Hilton might be going to jail. (not).
  • And the world’s swimsuit model population may suffer from a Hepatitis A outbreak from a skeezy chef.

Good news day eh?

Some Kittens for Your Day

Just so cute, I couldn’t pick one! From The Daily Kitten:
kitten1.jpg
Nyan: “Here’s Nyan, a two-week old kitten. She was very sleepy for some reason, and instead of finding a comfortable place to curl up, she just settled down right where she was on my kitchen floor. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of her ball of sleepy cuteness.”

kitten2.jpg
Guiness: “This is my friend’s cat Guinness. He’s very clumsy and overwhelmingly cute and thinks fluffing himself up is intimidating.”

kitten3.jpg
Stuart: “He was given to us by a family friend. His name is Stuart because he looks like Stuart Little. He’s bright white and has two different colored eyes – blue and green. What a fiesty little guy!” Keep reading this »

Internet Explorer 7 Released

microsoft-internet_explorer-firefoxphishing_nfn.jpgSo the super duper, supposed to be fantastic, fix-it-all Internet Explorer 7 was released yesterday (granted it does fix A LOT). Within the last 24 hours there have been reports of crashes and information disclosure vulnerability. Granted this IS a beta release, however… it’s MS IE… what did you expect?

Chuckle, chuckle. Laugh, laugh. Haha.

All things aside, this means a lot of work for me. “Why?” you say? Well let me tell you a little story: The wonderful people at Microsoft decided they wanted to be different… to be special… to NOT follow the W3C (logical) standards of CSS. It was that day that Internet Explorer was born. For every version up until now, massive amounts of display issues would surface once one coded the style (or display) information for a design. So because IE decided they wanted to be “cool” and stand from the crowd, I’ve had to insert a special little “hack” everytime I created a website.

Well now that’s gone – since the people over there finally decided to actually listen to anyone – now I need to go back to EVERY website I’ve created and “fix” that little hack… along with the plethora of other new display problems.

So what does this all mean? Go Firefox. It’s free and doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out. *thumbs up*
